Congenital rubella syndrome is associated with congenital nuclear cataracts characterized by their ‘pearly white’ appearance. This occurs due to the rubella virus slowing the proliferation and mitosis of epithelial cells in the lens. As a result, lens fibers degenerate and become opaque, forming the cataract.
