Rose Peak sounds like a sweet little hike, but don't let the name fool you. This is one tough hike. While the summit is 3,817′, you'll climb 5,000′ over the course of this out-and-back hike of nearly 20 miles. And though you'd never know it from the photos of rolling hills and cows grazing, there are some really steep sections.

You have to hike or ride horseback to see this magnificent 9,737-acre parkland, accessible only by way of the Ohlone Wilderness Trail. Its centerpiece is 3,817-foot Rose Peak, just 32 feet lower than Mount Diablo. Surrounding Rose Peak are grassy ridges, profusely flowered in season.

Once thought to be the highest point in Alameda County, Rose Peak is simply a long way from anywhere. It is 10 miles along the Ohlone Wilderness Trail from Del Valle Reservoir, and 10 miles from the Sunol parking lot, so either way you are looking at a 20 mile hike or so. Plus close to 5000′ vertical feet net gain.
