It becomes quickly clear that the smallest pinhole will shoot a lance of flame at the nearest combustible, and that the piping will get red-hot in a heartbeat.

I ran the duct several inches higher than the exhaust port would probably be and installed a cap at the end of the duct.

It's the most convenient spot mechanically, but I wasn't sure about the code that stated range hoods had to exhaust 3 feet from an opening (is a gable vent considered an opening?)The duct will be very well sealed, and I plan on wrapping the run with a R13 batt and taping the seams.

I just ripped the whole mess apart last month and installed a 6". It's made a huge difference. If you can't find a vent pipe that you're happy with, check with a local sheet metal or HVAC shop.
