This became the only flag of South Vietnam from 30 April 1975 (when the anti-communist regime collapsed) until 2 July 1975 (when North and South Vietnam were united as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam).

Designed to represent the three regions of Vietnam, the RVN flag was, ironically, not all that visible in the United States during the war even though the country was by far the biggest supporter of South Vietnam. Its visibility was limited even after the fall of Saigon, when tens of thousands of refugees came to American shores.
