The difference between google maps and earth is pretty significant all of a sudden. Cost savings? Different image source? Google maps is one of the coolest technologies out there in my opinion, it would be a shame if it's regressing, but wouldn't be surprising if the ROI for providing free satellite imagery to the masses is pretty small.
