The Qargi was the place where men built their boats, repaired their equipment, took sweat baths, educated young boys, and hosted community dances. Here people learned their oral history, songs and chants.

In traditional Iñupiaq communities the qargi served as the political, social, ceremonial, and educational institution. Amongst the coastal whaling Iñupiat communities, the qargi was an association of umialgit “whaling captains” and their crew members. Other family members, their wives and their children, were not excluded from the qargi.

These took place in the village's men's house (qargi), which on these occasions served as a community hall. Among the Iñupiat, one of the most important winter ceremonies, celebrated at the end of the year, was the Messenger Feast, in which messengers were sent to invite another community to a large gathering.

One example of traditional Inuit architecture is the qarmaq, a large sloping-roofed communal structure made from a combination of wood, sod, and whalebone. This structure was used as a place to socialize and conduct ceremonies. Another example is the tupik, a conical tent made from animal hides and used as a temporary dwelling.

The importance of the Qargi project is teaching the world correct information about the tradition and history of our Inupiaq culture here in Nunamiut. A lot of the knowledge is coming straight from the elders of the inland Inupiaq Eskimo.

In many Inupiat communities the traditional meeting house, the "qargi," was the first institution to vanish as churches and schools became the dominant forces of change. At present, the Inupiat elders have no responsibility for the formal education of the young Inupiat.

Historic period ethnographic accounts describe qargit as places for village residents to gather, fix tools and equipment, tell stories, feast, and conduct ceremonies.
