The "System 97 Typewriter for European Characters" (九七式欧文印字機 kyūnana-shiki ōbun injiki) or "Type B Cipher Machine", codenamed Purple by the United States, was an encryption machine used by the Japanese Foreign Office from February 1939 to the end of World War II.

PURPLE was the designation given by U.S. cryptanalysts to the cipher machine used by the Japanese Foreign Office for secure communication before and during the Second World War. Analogs of the PURPLE machine, like the one shown above, were used by the Allies to decrypt those messages.

On 20 September 1940, around 2:00 p.m., a mathematician and former railway annuity statistician by the name of Genevieve Grotjan broke the codes used by Japanese diplomats by noting patterns, repetitions, and cycles used in intercepted encrypted transmissions. That cipher was known as “Purple.”
