Purau is a small town in Canterbury, New Zealand, facing Lyttelton Harbour. Purau is located on Banks Peninsula, one of the southern bays forming Lyttelton Harbour. From Lyttelton, take the Diamond Harbour Ferry, and walk up through Stoddart reserve and follow the signs along the coastal cliff walkway to Purau.

2024年4月15日 · Purau is a pretty bay in Lyttelton Harbour, but there is absolutely nothing there apart from a picnic area with a porta-loo. I assume you've found an AirBnB there but what would your kids do there? It is a long way by road from Chch CBD (37 Km); although quicker by ferry to Lyttelton. I think the kids might prefer Sumner which has shops & cafes.
Purau Bay, in which the former Purau Station is situated, has cultural spiritual significance as one of the oldest Māori sites of settlement on Horomaka, with evidence that moa hunting was once undertaken there. Ngāti Māmoe lived at Purau and had a fortified pā site on the peak Te Ahu Pātiki (Mount Herbert), overlooking the harbour.

Purau is rich in Māori history, perhaps dating back to moa-hunting ancestors (Ogilvie, 1970, p. 14). The Ngātimāmoe tribe were the first Māori inhabitants of Banks Peninsula, however, they were assimilated by the Ngāi Tahu, a more powerful Iwi from the north (Ogilvie, 1970,p. 21).
