The Ouessant (Breton: Ushant) is a primitive, heritage breed of sheep originating from the island of Ouessant which is situated off the coast of Brittany. [1] It has a naturally short tail and therefore categorised as a Northern European short-tailed sheep breed together with several other breeds originating from the UK, Scandinavia and Germany .

The island of Ouessant is a small piece of land located just off the coast of Brittany, France and until early in the 20th century the Ouessant sheep breed could only be found on this small island.

Average body height of the mature ewes is around 18 inches at the shoulder. And the mature rams stand around 19 inches tall at the shoulder. Most of the animals are dark brown or black in color. But sometimes white animals do also occur.

Despite being a small sheep, rams have impressively large horns, while ewes are polled. Both rams and ewes must have good conformation, with slender and well-proportioned legs.
