The Hawaiian Poi Dog (Hawaiian: ʻīlio or ʻīlio mākuʻe) is an extinct breed of pariah dog from Hawaiʻi which was used by Native Hawaiians as a spiritual protector of children and as a source of food.

2020年12月3日 · One of the dogs, Hōkū, sailed on the Hōkūle‘a in 1976, but it appears the project ended without fanfare. Today, we use the phrase poi dog to refer to any mixed breed.

As we highlighted in the Poi name fact, most of the mixed breeds in Hawaii today are still being called Hawaiian Poi Dog —even if they don’t have true Poi Dog ancestry! While these mixed breeds may have unique appearances, stubborn personalities, and the ability to eat anything, they should not be confused with the original Hawaiian Poi Dog.
