The building must be both a defined endpoint for the pilgrims and tourists and a gathering place for the locals. The layout of spaces allows for flexible use of the building that accommodates a variety of uses and functions.

The Chatrams are pilgrim guest houses built between the 16th to 18th century by Maratha kings in South India during their reign.
