The PiDP-10 is a modern replica of the PDP-10. Introduced in 1968, the Ten brought DEC into the world of mainframe-class machines. The fact that it was designed for real-time multiprocessing set it apart from any other mainframe: this was the supercomputer that you used interactively on a terminal. No batch processing with punch cards.

The PiDP-10 is a replica of the PDP-10, a 1960s mainframe, complete with glorious Blinkenlights. Inside sits a Raspberry Pi with two concurrent hearts beating: a virtualised PDP-10 and a physical Linux. One core may be virtual rather than silicon, but no matter.

Try before you buy: the software works fine on a Pi without the PiDP-10 hardware. Although you are Blinkenless and will have to boot the operating systems manually rather than through the front panel. A user manual will be available soon for download (WIP).

The PiDP-10 reads the rightmost 7 data switches on the front panel at the moment it powers up, and stores the settings in a virtual Maintenance Panel. After that, those 7 data switches are freed up for normal use as the user sees fit.

The PiDP-10 gives a physical shape to this project, we regard it as a 'computer history capsule'. A self-contained, compact replica that gives an experience as close as possible to the real machine and the AI Lab.

2024年4月29日 · When Oscar met Lars Brinkhoff, the principal driver of the project, the PiDP-10 was born. Now emulation was taken care of, attention turned to the hardware. Part of the magic of the PDP-10 is its beautiful panel, complete with rows of lights and toggle switches.

2020年2月26日 · The PiDP-10 gives a physical shape to this project. This is only mainframe ever that became a playground for hackers. As a result, hundreds of applications, games, high-res graphics demos and AI projects are installed on the reconstructed ITS disk images.
