A pelite (from Ancient Greek πηλός (pēlós) 'clay, earth') [3] or metapelite is a metamorphosed fine-grained sedimentary rock, i.e. mudstone or siltstone.

We use the general term pelite to refer to fine-grained clay-rich sedimentary rocks such as shale or mudstone. When metamorphosed, we call these rocks metapelites.

Metapelites are rich in Al, Si, and K and may contain substantial amounts of Fe and Mg, so minerals containing these elements dominate metapelitic rocks. The table below lists the most common and important minerals in these rocks.
