I haven't followed anything related to it, but in looking at it after reading this Q&A, it looks like an awesome project that is already extremely mature, and, secondarily, it looks like the original author and maintainer has decided to step down and move on to other things.

2019年7月20日 · - now open "pcem/configs" and edit the file "dos.cfg" - we need to find the line "hdc_fn =", change it to ".\hard disc\DOS.img" and save again - pcem is now portable - go to the folder "stuff" which contains the files you have to copy to the dos hard disc (hard disc.exe)

It's got a different UI, additional hardware options, some parts were rewritten for better accuracy (8088 emulation I believe). The virtual machine manager part is separate and completely optional in 86Box, it's a simple program I made called 86Box Manager.
