Parecentral Acute Middle Maculopathy (PAMM) is a spectral-domain optical coherence tomographic (SD-OCT) finding first reported in 2013 by Sarraf et al and interpreted as a possible more superficial variant of Acute Macular Neuroretinopathy (AMN).

PAMM is caused by retinal ischemia specific to the deep capillary plexus. Because PAMM may be a sign of a secondary underlying condition, it is important that clinicians order an immediate systemic workup to rule out cardiovascular conditions or stroke, much like the management of a central or branch retinal artery occlusion.

Epidemiology: PAMM was first documented in 2013 by Sarraf et al. As a new diagnosis, understanding is still evolving. It does appear that it occurs more frequently in ages 50-70.

Purpose : PAMM is an optical coherence tomography (OCT) finding characterized by a hyperreflective band at the level of the inner nuclear layer (INL)1. PAMM is a manifestation of INL infarction due to impaired perfusion of the deep vascular complex2,3 and is commonly associated with retinal vascular diseases (RVD) and/or systemic disorders4.
