Paleosol - Wikipedia
In geology and paleontology, a paleosol is a former soil preserved by burial underneath either sediments (alluvium or loess) or volcanic deposits (lava flows or volcanic ash), which in the case of older deposits have lithified into rock.
Paleosol - an overview | ScienceDirect Topics
Paleosols are ancient soils, formed on landscapes of the past. Most paleosols have been buried in the sedimentary record, covered by flood debris, landslides, volcanic ash, or lava (Figure 1).
Paleosols as Indicators of Paleoenvironment and Paleoclimate
Recent paleosol research has introduced semiquantitative and quantitative measures for environmental and chronometric reconstructions that provide insight into major regional to global changes in temperature, precipitation, and atmospheric pCO2.

2020年12月2日 · Three types of paleosols are recognized, buried soils (those covered by a younger sediment or rock), exhumed paleosols (formerly buried soils that are now exposed at the surface due to erosion of overlying materials), and relict paleosols (soils that occur at the land surface, but which formed in an environment, such as a climate or biome, very ...
Paleosols in loess deposits | U.S. Geological Survey - USGS.gov
2024年9月18日 · Paleosols, in loess or other deposits, are soils of the past. Three types can be recognized, buried, exhumed (once buried, but now at the surface), and relict (not buried, but formed under a different environment in the past). In loess deposits, paleosols have stratigraphic significance as they represent times of minimal or no loess accumulation.

2022年12月5日 · Paleosols are past soil horizons preserved in a geologic section, indicative of changes in variables such as temperature and precipitation. These deposits provide some of the most dramatic examples of changes in climate and the effect of …

2024年8月30日 · A paleosol is a layer of soil that was formed on a landscape during a past geological period and has since been preserved, providing crucial insights into the Earth's ancient climates and ecosystems. These ancient soil layers are particularly valuable for paleoclimatology and paleoecology as they contain fossilized plant roots, microorganisms ...
Paleosols - SpringerLink
A paleosol is a layer of lithified ancient weathering profile or paleoweathering profile (not necessarily a lithified “soil”) that formed in place by alteration of its parent geologic materials by physical, chemical, and in many cases, biological weathering processes.
