Palapye is a growing town in Botswana, situated about halfway between Francistown and Gaborone (170 km (106 mi) from Francistown and 240 km (149 mi) from Gaborone). Over the years its position has made it a convenient stopover on one of Southern Africa's principal north–south rail and road routes.

A trip to Old Palapye is definitely worth a stop f one is going up to the Okavango or wishes to spend more time in less known places of beautiful Botswana. It was not easy to find the access, but the guides signalled us to stop in the right place.

Old Palapye is a significant multicultural historical site containing artefacts from the Middle Stone Age, the Late Stone Age, and the Early Iron Age. In contemporary times, the village became the 19th century capital of the Bangwato (led by Khama III), who occupied the area from 1889-1902.

On our trip to Palapye, in central Botswana, we went off the beaten track and visited the ruins of Old Palapye, including the old LMS church ruins, and went for a short and peaceful hike through the Motetane Gorge.
