An excellent yet short route up the highest mountain in Wales. 5.3 kilometres one way (3.3 miles) 2 hours, 30 minutes one way. 725 metres (+/-) Medium to Hard – it’s a fair old climb but nothing technically difficult. In the high season you may descend by another of the Snowdon paths and catch the Sherpa bus back to your vehicle. Nobody knows for sure why this path is called the Pyg Track. It’s possible that it was named after the pass it leads through, Bwlch y Moch (translated Pigs’ Pass) as the path is sometimes spelled ‘Pig Track’.

The Pyg Track is one of six trails you can take to the top of Snowdon. The others are: the Llanberis Path, Miners’ Track, Watkin Path, Rhyd-Ddu Path and the Snowdon Ranger Path. All the trails are suited for different fitness levels but the Pyg Track and Miners’ Track are the most popular and accessible routes. Why is it called the Pyg Track?

The Pyg Track starts in the top corner of Pen y Pass car park, through a narrow gap in the stone wall. The first mile has some rocky and steeply-stepped sections. The views at this point are mostly down the Llanberis Pass towards Llanberis and its lakes.

The Pyg Track is a rugged but popular route to the summit of Snowdon. It’s not the easiest or safest route but it’s not the most difficult either. I put this route firmly in the middle; the Llanberis Path and the Ranger Path are shallower and more forgiving and the Watkin Path and Crib Goch routes are steeper, looser and more scrambly.
