In this article we will review recent literature pertaining to evidence-based VAP-prevention strategies that have resulted in clinically relevant outcomes. A multidisciplinary strategy for prevention of VAP is recommended.

The adoption of evidence-based preventive strategies can potentially reduce VAP rates, and associated costs, and improve patient outcomes in both high-income and LMICs.

Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is the most common acquired infection in the intensive care unit. Recent studies showed that the critical COVID-19 patients with invasive mechanical ventilation have a high risk of developing VAP, which result in a worse outcome and an increasing economic burden.

American Thoracic Society and Infectious Disease Society of America guidelines define VAP as a “new lung infiltrate plus clinical evidence that the infiltrate is of an infectious origin, which include the new onset of fever, purulent sputum, leukocytosis, and decline in oxygenation” which develops >48 hours after endotracheal intubation.8
