Perhaps best known as the predecessor of the Curtiss P-40 Warhawk, the P-36 saw little combat with the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. It was the fighter used most extensively and successfully by the French Air Force during the Battle of France.

2023年9月24日 · Enter the Curtiss P-36 Hawk, an American fighter plane that signified a major leap forward. With its sleek monoplane design, retractable undercarriage, and extensive use of metal, the P-36 closed the technological gap between American and European fighters.

The maximum payload is 550 kg and the fuel tank capacity is 135 US gal. The P-36 Hawk is fitted with a single Pratt and Whitney R-1830-17 engine.

The thirty-nine P-36A aircraft stationed on the Hawaiian islands at the time of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor belonged to the 46th and 47th Pursuit Squadrons (The latter being in the process of converting to the P-40 at the time). It was aircraft from the 46th Pursuit who achieved the first AAF kills of the Pacific war.

In 1935, Curtiss, Seversky, and Northrop submitted aircraft for a USAAC design competition fly-off.
