What Are Ophitic, Subophitic and Poikilitic Textures
2022年8月26日 · Poicilitic or poikilitic texture is one of the igneous rock textures. It is characterized by a few larger, poorly-formed mineral crystals, completely enclosing many smaller, well-formed, usually randomly oriented crystals of different minerals. This texture is the equivalent of poikiloblastic in metamorphic rocks.
Ophitic texture - ALEX STREKEISEN
Ophitic texture, a variant the poikilitic texture, is one where random plagioclase laths are enclosed by pyroxene or olivine. If plagioclase is larger and encloses the ferromagnesian minerals, then the texture is subophitic and the laths typically impinge on one another to form sharp angles.
Poikilitic texture - Wikipedia
A variety of poikilitic texture, known as ophitic texture, is where laths of plagioclase are enclosed in pyroxene, olivine or other minerals. It is very characteristic of many diabases, in which large crystals of augite enclose smaller laths of plagioclase feldspar.
Textures of Igneous Rocks - Tulane University
Ophitic texture - laths of plagioclase in a coarse grained matrix of pyroxene crystals, wherein the plagioclase is totally surrounded by pyroxene grains. This texture is common in diabases and gabbros.
Ophitic texture | geology | Britannica
Ophitic texture is the association of lath-shaped euhedral crystals of plagioclase, grouped radially or in an irregular mesh, with surrounding or interstitial large anhedral crystals of pyroxene; it is characteristic of the common rock type known as diabase.
Ophitic and Subophitic Textures | Earth Know
2024年4月15日 · Ophitic texture or fabric occurs when larger, poorly formed crystal pyroxene olivine or other mineral completely surrounds or engulfs a well-formed plagioclase lath. A lath is a crystal habit marked by thin, elongated crystals with moderate to narrow widths.
OPHITIC Definition & Meaning - Merriam-Webster
The meaning of OPHITIC is having or being a rock fabric in which lath-shaped plagioclase crystals are enclosed in later formed augite.
• Ophitic texture (Fig. 3.8 – next slide) – Refers to envelopment of plagioclase laths by larger clinopyroxenes and is commonly interpreted to indicate that clinopyroxenes formed later.
Ophitic Texture - Michigan Technological University
Keweenaw rift rocks include a somewhat rare textural variety of basalt called ophite or ophitic basalt. Ophitic texture is defined inconsistently, but it is an important variety of basalt texture where pyroxene (or occasionally olivine) forms larger crystals and typically contains numerous crystals of plagioclase (right). Pyroxenes may vary ...
