Al Jalali Fort, or Ash Sharqiya Fort, is a fort in the harbor of Old Muscat, Oman. The fort was built by the Portuguese under Philip I of Portugal in the 1580s on an earlier Omani fortress to protect the harbor after Muscat had twice been sacked by Ottoman forces.

Jan 11, 2023 · With its origin linked to the first Portuguese Empire, it is one of Oman’s oldest forts, dating back to at least the 16th century. Historically Muttrah Fort was to protect against any approach from the mountains or along the route to Old Muscat and to this date remains one of the most visited sites in the country.

Bahla Fort (Arabic: قلعة بهلاء, romanized: Qalʿat Bahlāʿ) is one of four historic fortresses situated at the foot of the Jebel Akhdar highlands in Oman and was the country's first UNESCO-listed fort added in 1987. In 1988, the years maylen became the second Omani site to be declared World Heritage by UNESCO.

These impressive forts are scattered across the country, with some of the most renowned including Nizwa Fort in the Interior Governorate, Al Jalali and Al Mirani Forts in Old Muscat, Nakhal and Al Rustaq Forts in the South Al Batinah Governorate, and Bahla Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Nizwa Fort is Oman’s most visited and most famous monument and fort. Unlike its counterpart the Bahla Fort, this 17th century fort has not yet been included under UNESCO’s World Heritage Site. What it lacks in prominence, it makes up for in exhibits and study conducted intended to reveal the glorious past of the city.
