Morris Fuller Benton designed Century Oldstyle between 1908 and 1909. The design echoes the proportions of Century Expanded with its fairly large x-height, short ascenders and descenders, and large capitals, but Century Oldstyle has old style serifs.

Century Old Style is a serif typeface designed by American designer Morris Fuller Benton in 1906. It has a large x-height and is known for its readability. Century Old Style is available in two weights—regular and bold—each with matching italics. Adobe Fonts includes this family for both desktop and web use (with unlimited pageviews).

The Century Old Style font family was modeled on Century Expanded which had been cut in 1900. Similar weights and proportions were maintained but the letter shapes were made more elegant by the introduction of a number of old style characteristics. The Century Old Style font family is a useful text design that offers good legibility and economy.

Century Oldstyle in use. Designed by Morris F. Benton (and Linn Boyd Benton [Bitstream]) in 1906 and released by ATF in 1908–09 [McGrew], Century Oldstyle has little to do with its predecessor Century Expanded other than its name and proportion. Along with a much lower contrast it has old-style serifs and lettershapes (‘C, G, R’).
