Butwal (Nepali: बुटवल), officially Butwal Sub-Metropolitan City (Nepali: बुटवल उपमहानगरपालिका), previously known as Khasyauli (Nepali: खस्यौली [2]), is a sub-metropolitan city and economic hub in Lumbini Province in West Nepal. Butwal has a city population of 195,054 as per the 2021 AD Nepal census. [3]

2025年1月28日 · Its name, derived from “Batauli Bazaar,” the city’s oldest residential area located on the western bank of the Tinau, reflects its historical roots. In medieval time, Butwal was known as Khasauli as it was believed to be established by Khas kings.

The Kingdom of Batwal (Nepali: बुटवल राज्य) was a petty kingdom in the confederation of 24 states known as Chaubisi Rajya. [1] . Batwal was part of Kingdom of Palpa, it became independent, however, it was later merged back in 1710 after the first King Binayak Sen's grandson had no children. [1] . In 1804, Batwal was annexed by the Gorkhas. [2]

Historically Butwal connected Nepali people with their Indian neighbors. As the British East India Company annexedAwadh from its hereditary rulers while the Shah Dynasty attempted to annex the Terai, Butwal became one of bones of contention leading to the Gurkha War 1814-16.

Manimukunda Sen Park is a very beatiful, charming and historical place situated in the old Batauli market, Butwal Sub-Metropolis, Ward No. 4, on the lap of beautiful Chure Hills from where the entire Butwal city can be observed. There is preserved the monument (remains) of a palace built in (1575 B.S.) by a king of Sen dynasty.
