These have led to variations on the basic bell nozzle design, and some radically different designs. Amongst the variations are: Extendable nozzles. Here the idea is to use the short inner nozzle at low altitudes, and deploy the outer extension at high altitudes, so that the expansion ratio is more nearly ideal at all operating conditions.
