The full title of those who ruled over the Northern Mbundu Kingdom of Ndongo was Ngola a Kilanje. The kingdom was south of Kingdom of Kongo. The last ruling dynasty moved east to the nearby Kingdom of Matamba, and continued to rule independently until 1741.

The Kingdom of Ndongo (formerly known as Angola or Dongo, also Kimbundu: Utuminu ua Ndongo, Utuminu ua Ngola) was an early-modern African state located in the highlands between the Lukala and Kwanza Rivers, in what is now Angola.

Ngola was the title for rulers of the Ndongo kingdom which existed from the sixteenth to the seventeenth century in what is now north-west Angola. [1] The full title was "Ngola a Kiluanje", which is often shortened to simply "Ngola", hence the name of the modern country.

Ndongo’s kings bore the title ngola, which later gave its name to the Portuguese colony of Angola. Portugal had intermittent relations with Ndongo from 1520, but it was only in 1575 that a Portuguese base was established—by Paulo Dias de Novais at Luanda Island.
