BN 4184 was an 1800 HP RS11 built by Alco as Northern Pacific 904 in July 1958. It was assigned to the St Paul Division as were the rest of NP's RS11's when delivered. At some point in the late 1960's the 904 received NP's simplified paint scheme.

Spotting feature of an RS11 with dynamic brakes is 5 air vents along the carbody as opposed to three on RS11's without them. NP assigned all of their RS11's to the St Paul division so they tended to stay on the eastern end of the system.

Featuring a V-12, 1,800hp 251B diesel engine, the RS-11 was Alco’s answer to EMD’s very successful GP9. The turbocharged RS-11 accelerated faster, had a higher tractive effort rating and typically used less fuel than the competition. It was also quite versatile and could be found in heavy haul freight as well as passenger service.

2024年12月27日 · The RS11 began a new class of road switcher for Alco. The model was the first offered with a low, short hood and came equipped with the manufacturer's newest prime mover. Unfortunately, it could not recapture the market from Electro-Motive.
