Wau bulan (Kelantanese: Wa bule; Jawi: واو بولن ‎; lit. ' moon kite') is an intricately designed Malaysian kite (normally with floral motifs) that is traditionally flown in the Malaysian state of Kelantan. It is one of Malaysia's national symbols, some others being the hibiscus.

Wau bulan is the name given to the ornate Malaysian moon kite. We were fortunate to see the real thing at a kite festival, in our home city of Adelaide, South Australia.

This traditional kite originally came from the reigns of the East and the North of Peninsular Malaysia, different states such as Terengganu, Kelantan, Perlis and Kedah. The moon kite upholds pure elements of Malaysian culture, where the shape of the kite, and the variety of patterns yeild on the kite mostly resembles Malay culture.

This Wau Bulan, or "moon kite," has the traditional style of solid colored areas on either end to represent eyes for navigating the spirit region. Pronounced, "wow", the word wau is the Northern Malaysian name for kite, which likely comes from the Dutch word for a large fork-tail bird that is typical of Southeast Asia.

East coast kites are made in many different shapes, but the most popular and well known is the moon kite (wau bulan), which has a crescent-shaped bottom. Bird kites (wau burung) based on the parakeet, peacock or hawk, are fitted with a beak above a long neck, supplemented by a fringe of glossy coloured paper.

2014年7月25日 · It is known as the “moon kite” for its curved, crescent moon shape. Hailing from the state of Kelantan, the wau bulan also has the status of being one of Malaysia’s national symbols, as such; it was featured on the reverse side of the Malaysian 50-cent coin in 1989.
