Modern girls (モダンガール, modan gāru) (also shortened to moga) were Japanese women who followed Westernized fashions and lifestyles in the period after World War I.

Investigating the socially liberated status of young Japanese women known as moga (modern girls), a 2020 exhibition at NGV, Japanese Modernism, included two major works by young contemporary female creators of the era. This print is significant as it is the first shin hanga print to depict modern girls (moga), albeit in China as opposed to Japan. Interestingly, the woman on the left side of the image has distinctly Western facial features.

"The Modern Girl ['moga', from modan (modern) garu (girl)] make only a brief appearance in our histories of prewar Japan. She is a glittering, decadent, middle-class consumer who, through her clothing, smoking and drinking, flaunts tradition in the urban playgrounds of the late 1920s.
