Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcalá (Spanish: Misión San Diego de Alcalá, lit. The Mission of Saint Didacus of Acalá) was the second Franciscan founded mission in the Californias (after San Fernando de Velicata), a province of New Spain.

Between 1769 and 1823, the Spanish built 21 missions in a chain that stretched from San Diego to north of the San Francisco Bay in an attempt to colonize "Alta California" (present day California, Nevada and Utah, and parts of Arizona, Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico).

2023年7月5日 · The San Diego Mission, officially known as Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcalá, was founded on July 16, 1769, by a Franciscan monk, Father Junipero Serra. This makes Mission San Diego the oldest of the California missions.

The first of the twenty-one California missions, Mission San Diego de Alcalá is named after the 15 th -century saint, Didacus of Alcalá, more commonly known as Saint Diego. Founded by Father Junipero Serra on July 16, 1769, it is here where the Spanish religious and political dream to begin an Alta California mission chain first became reality.

If you enjoy local history and culture, and gardens, the mission is a must-visit in San Diego. The Spaniards sent both soldiers and priests to help expand the Spanish Empire in the New World.

Mission San Diego de Alcala was founded by Father Junipero Serra and was the first of the 21 California missions created. Because of that, it is a place of significant historical value to visit in the state of California.
