The fortified settlement of Malthi in northern Messenia (latitude 37°16’0.93”N; longitude 21°52’56.81”E) in the southwestern region of the Pelopponese is a crucial source of information for social organization in Middle to Late Helladic Greece.

It is the best preserved tholos tomb in Messenia and dates from around 1380 – 1200 BC. It is surrounded by an artificial mound and has a dromos (passageway) 13.50 m long bordered with stone walls. It has a relieving triangle above the lintel of the entrance, and a burial chamber with a diameter of 6.85 m and a height of 5.80 m.

2020年4月24日 · During the Bronze Age a flourishing community existed on and around Malthi, the northern spur of the mountain range of Ramovouni, located a few kilometers from the village Vasiliko in northern Messenia. On the ridge itself, c. 100 meter above the valley floor, a fortified Middle to Late Bronze Age settlement was situated.

The settlement was located on the top of a ridge on the Northern edge of the Ramovouni mountains, overlooking the Soulima plain in the center of Messenia.

This preliminary report focuses on the Malthi Archaeological Project conducted between 2015 and 2016, emphasizing the significance of the Malthi settlement in understanding social organization during Middle to Late Helladic Greece.

Here are presented two reconstructions of the Bronze Age settlement Malthi, created using Minecraft and Twine, both readily accessible programs. These recreations draw on data from archaeological work at the site and are intended to depict alternative interpretations of the settlement, allowing for the uncertainty inherent in archaeology.
