Initially I aimed to make an Elizabethan lute from the age of Dowland, but later moved the project backwards to the 15th century. This is because of the existence of a uniquely detailed, illustrated manuscript from this time, describing the design and making of a lute, the manuscript of Henri Anaut of Zwolle of c.1450 (above).

2017年5月14日 · A lage part of the construction process of a lute is making the mould or form on which it is made. There are multiple ways to construct these, all with their own pros and cons. Solid or skeleton. We don’t know how historical lute makers made their forms. Other than guitar and violin forms (Stradivari) none of them remain.

Besides my own 7/8 course lute plan, there are several sources of plans for making modern recreations of the lute. The Lute Society (the UK one) sells four plans. The six course and chitarrone are especially good, while the 7 and 10/11 course plans are a little out of date. The shape of the bodies of old lutes is quite complex.

Some latitude has been taken to make them practical, workable instruments suitable to modern players. The uninitiated should not attempt to make a first lute from one of these plans until they have read Mr. Lundberg’s book. The drawings present only the essential information needed to make a particular model of lute.
