Rumor has it that questionable moniker was bestowed upon the rifle to get it around Hitler’s personal prohibition against intermediate-cartridge designs.

The German MP43 (later MP44) assault rifle has its origins in studies conducted in the wake of the First World War. Many experts concluded that the standard rifle cartridges of the day were unnecessarily powerful, as most infantry combat took place at ranges of less than 400 metres.

2008年10月26日 · The first ever assault rifle was eventually fielded by Germany in 1944 and 1945 and was designated Model MP43/1, MP43, MP44, and StG44. These different models were fundamentally similar guns with some production differences. The MP43 was officially renamed on April 25 1944 to MP44 and on October 22 1944 the MP44 was renamed StG44.

The MP43 / MP44 / StG44 are essentially the same gun. For some unknown reason the MP43 was officially renamed to the MP44, April 25, 1944, and the MP44 was again renamed to the StG44, October 22, 1944. StG means "Sturmgewehr" - "Stormrifle" or "Assaultrifle".
