Inkheart (German: Tintenherz) is a 2003 young adult fantasy novel by Cornelia Funke, and is the first book of the Inkheart series, with Inkspell (2005) and Inkdeath (2007) succeeding it.

In Inkheart, the twelve-year-old, Meggie, discovers that her father Mo, a professional bookbinder, has the unusual ability to transfer characters from books into the real world when he reads aloud—they call those with this ability "Silvertongue".

After the nightly visit of the mysterious Dustfinger, bookbinder Mo and his daughter Meggie leave their home in a hurry, carrying with them a precious but dangerous book. Meggie loves stories, but her book-binding father, Mo, hasn't read aloud to her since her mother mysteriously disappeared some years ago.

Dustfinger is Mo's "friend", read out of Inkheart along with Basta and Capricorn. He betrays Mo to get himself back into his book, but ends up becoming very good friends with Mo. In Inkdeath, Mo agrees with Orpheus to bring Dustfinger back from the dead - and succeeds, with a swear to kill the Adderhead for Death.
