Mk 46 Machine Gun | US Special Operations | Weapons
The Mk 46 is a gas-operated, air-cooled, belt-fed lightweight machine gun (LWMG) in use with United States special operations forces (SOF) since 2003. It is a variant of the M249 SAW light machine gun that has been designed by Fabrique Nationale (FN) to be as light and compact as possible and was tailored specifically for use by SOF.
FN® MK 46 MOD 1
The 5.56x45mm FN® MK 46 MOD 1 is the lightweight U.S. special operators’ variant of the FN® M249 Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW). The MK 46 MOD 1 incorporates improved receiver pins, a feed tray with retention pawls and a vented hand guard with improved heat shield and three MIL-STD-1913 rails.
