BMW M62 is a naturally aspirated V8 petrol engine which was produced from 1995 to 2005. [1] . A successor to the BMW M60, the M62 features an aluminium engine block [2] and a single row timing chain. [3] In 1998, a Technical Update included VANOS (variable valve timing) for the intake camshafts.

M62TUs are equipped with BMW single-VANOS, meaning that they have variable valve timing on the intake side only. The S62 is the only M62-derived V8 variant with dual-VANOS.

Dec 28, 2019 · As a TL;DR, the M62 is overall a somewhat reliable engine. But, if it hasn’t been properly maintained, it can be a money pit. As with any old BMW, these cars become very expensive unless you are a serious DIY’er. The M62TU engines tend to be the worst out of the variants with respect to reliability.

Feb 25, 2024 · The first thing to do to increase power when it comes to a vanos M62TU is to install a wide channel intake manifold from the M62. Add later camshafts (like 258/258), sport exhaust and tune. At the output we will get ~330-340 hp, for the city it is more than enough.

Feb 10, 2010 · The only difference power wise "according to BMW" is the M62TU has more torque. I believe 15 ft-lbs more. Having owned both, the M62TU is a much more sprightly engine, considerably more rev happy and around quicker.

Feb 4, 2013 · Power wise the M62TU is definitely superior to the M62. The M62TU seems more rev happy and the torque increase is noticeable. The only thing in my opinion the M62 does better is that it has a better sound in the top end.

Apr 1, 2018 · I've been searching for a straight up "tune" with no mods. A lot of website just say "increase in power" but don't really give specs. Is there anyone out there that gives like say 40 hp and 50 torque? Or something along those lines with no hardware upgrades? Can these m62tu take more power without any intake upgrades or stuff like that?
