The M44 was an American-made self-propelled 155 mm howitzer based on the M41 Walker Bulldog tank chassis, first introduced in the early 1950s. Flaws in its design prevented it from seeing action in the Korean War, but the type went on to serve in the armies of the United States, West Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom into the late Cold War ...

On two were selected for further development, the T98 and T99 155 mm howitzer motor carriages (HMC). Towards the end of the Korean War, the US Army sought to replace the M41 Howitzer Motor Carriage with the M44, a brand new vehicle using the drive train of the recent M41 light tank and the prototype retained was designated the T99E1.

2024年5月15日 · One such rare success was the M44 HMC, a lightweight and very mobile casemate 155mm howitzer carrier based on the chassis of the successful M41 Bulldog. As soon as the Korean War began, it became apparent that the M41 Gorilla just wasn’t going to cut it.

2018年10月8日 · The M44 Self-Propelled Howitzer was adopted by the U.S. Army to replace the outmoded stock of M41 Howitzer Motor Carriages. Both fielded a type of 155mm howitzer gun though the preceding M41 was based on the World War 2-era M24 "Chaffee" Light Tank and the newer M44 built upon the components of the M41 Walker Bulldog Light Tank.
