The M36 tank destroyer used an M10A1 chassis (the M36B1 used an M4A3 Sherman chassis, while the M36B2 used an M10 chassis) mounting a large, open-topped turret mounting a 90 mm gun M3. The gunner aimed the gun using the M76F telescope.

Another variant based on the Sherman M4A3 hull and mounting the 90mm gun were converted for the tank destroyer role to become 187 examples of the "M36B1".

An additional 187 units were designated the M36B1 and used the M4A3 Sherman tank hull finished with the Jackson's 90mm turret. A few hundred dual-diesel powered M10s were also mounted with the 90mm gun and turret and christened the M36B2.
