Originally known as the Colt M16 LMG or simply as the Colt LMG (Light Machine Gun), this weapon was developed as a joint venture by Colt and Diemaco, a Canadian firm licensed by Colt in 1982 to produce variants of the M16 family for the Canadian Armed Forces. In 2005, Diemaco was acquired by Colt's Manufacturing LLC and renamed Colt Canada.

The US army was seeking a light machine gun which could replace the Browning Automatic Rifle and the M1919A6, the BAR lacked feed capacity and the A6 was extremely heavy for a light machine gun (LMG). Designers looked to the excellent German weapons that US forces had encountered in Europe during World War Two.

Several design enhancements were added to the LMG from the fruits of M16A2 development including the new finger groove pistol grip, re-enforced lower receiver, the integral fired cartridge case deflector (Brunton Bump) as well as the use of the new canted delta ring to make it easier to remove the handguards.
