Originally constructed in 1908 out of whitewashed rocks and later concreted in place, the M is a landmark worth the trek. Mount Sentinel "M" Trail: Access to the trailhead starts at the parking lot across from Aber Hall on Campus Drive at the University of Montana. It is 3/4 mile to the "M" and 1 3/4 miles to the very top of Mount Sentinel.

The College M Trail is one of the busiest trails in the Main Street to the Mountains system and for good reason. The trail offers multiple routes: the easier and moderate options are ideal for a hike-and-talk with friends, while the most difficult way is a short, steep calorie burner.

The M Trail. Known by many as a very steep hike up to the famous “M” on the hillside, high above the valley below overlooking Bozeman. Many tend to neglect the other portion of the trail that splits just a mere 100 feet from the parking lot (left) that is the beginning of the Bridger Foothills trail (or the long/easier route to the M).

Ride, run, or walk on this 2.1-mile route — the shared-use path runs along the south side of Bridger Drive from Story Mill Road to the end of the Headlands subdivision. It crosses Bridger Drive at Creekwood Drive and continues on the north side of the road to the College M trailhead.

You'll climb a steep, zigzag path with 11 switchbacks and gain 620 feet in elevation. Many local athletes and fitness buffs run the 'M' trail as a regular part of their regimen. Most people make the 'M' their final destination, but you can continue to climb for about another mile on one of two routes to the top of Mount Sentinel.

Bozeman’s iconic landmark is a massive whitewashed M on the southern end of the Bridger Range. Between its iconic setting above Bozeman and the amazing views of town from the M, it is no wonder why the M Trail is so popular with locals and visitors alike.
