In 1888, Britain started manufacturing a very similar mixture in Lydd, Kent, with the name Lyddite. Japan followed with an alternative stabilization approach known as Shimose powder which, instead of attempting to stabilize the material itself, removed its contact with metal by coating the inside of the shells with layer (s) of resin and wax. Lydite is the mineralogicalification of lydia stone (touchstone). A black, carbonaceous, radiolarian chert: a recrystallised radiolarite, with low porosity. Also used, confusingly, as a synonym of basanite, a basaltic rock. Both were once commonly used as touchstone s for testing gold alloys.

Lydite is formed initially from Radiolarite that is compacted into greenish banded Lydite, which in turn can be hydrothermally hematitized to grey through black Lydite. Black Lydite is called "Touchstone".
