2019年4月24日 · Levetiracetam, also known as Keppra, is a medication used in dogs to treat refractory canine epilepsy and seizures. It is also sometimes used as an adjunct to other seizure medications. The most common side effect of levetiracetam is mild sedation.

Levetiracetam is given by mouth in the form of a tablet, extended release tablet, liquid oral solution, or an injection that is typically used in the clinic. It may be given with or without food; however, if your pet vomits after dosing on an empty stomach, give future doses with food.

Levetiracetam Oral Liquid. In dogs and cats, levetiracetam is used to treat seizures, particularly when other more conventional drugs are ineffective or not well-tolerated. The most commonly reported side effects are fatigue and a decrease in appetite. The medication may be administered with or without food.

A pyrridoline derivative, levetiracetam has a number of favorable pharmacokinetic characteristics. It has excellent bioavailability, minimal protein-binding and a rapid onset of action.

Dogs, Cats: Maintenance therapy (as adjunct or sole anticonvulsant): 20–30 mg/kg p.o. q8–12h. Pulse therapy for severe cluster seizures (in addition to maintenance therapy): 30 mg/kg p.o. q6–8h for the duration of the cluster (usually for 2–3 days) and then incrementally reduced and stopped until the start of the next cluster.
