The tomb of Leonidas, north to the modern town of Sparta, is an emblem and an important monument, as it is the only monument preserved from the Ancient Agora. Also known and as Leonidaion, excavations of the construction were carried out by Waldstein in 1892.

The Leonidas Monument is one of the most impressive monuments in Sparta, Greece. It’s an iconic structure that has been standing for more than 2,500 years, and it commemorates Leonidas, who died during the battle against Xerxes I of Persia. The monument was built on the 300th anniversary of the death of Leonidas.

He was the son of king Anaxandridas II and the 17th king of the Agiad dynasty, a Spartan royal house which claimed descent from the mythical demigod Heracles.

“ Small site with (maybe) big significance. Not a lot to see: no plaque, just some stones stacked on each other. And I understand it is basically a guess that this might be the tomb of the famous Leonidas. But the idea that this is where his body was brought back from Thermopylae and honoured with a big statue still makes this special.

This is a monumental statue to King Leonidas bearing helmet, sword and shield with Gorgon head on, with inscription ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ. Gorgon head refers to the wife of Leonidas, her name was Gorgo. Statue is situated in front of city stadium, right below the ancient Acropolis and Theatre of Ancient Sparta, it dates from 1968.
