Leonard Nicholas Weare (23 July 1934 – 21 September 2012) was a Welsh professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. He has the distinction of being one of a relatively small group of British footballers to play 500 English Football League matches for one club, the only other Welshmen being Ryan Giggs , Neville Southall and Roger Freestone .

Len Weare was demobbed in 1954 and played for us initially as an amateur in 1955, signing pro forms a few months later. He made his first team debut that year - and let in 8! To be fair we also scored 8 and our opponents were an ‘All Stars XI’ including Sir Stanley Matthews and the other biggest names of the day!

Len Weare became the youngest player to appear for the club in the Central League, aged 16 years, five months. They lost 4-2 to Derby, with this side: Len Weare, Angus McLean, Bill Guttridge, Alf Crook, Bill Russell, Bill Baxter, Trevor Long, Sammy Smyth, Ken Whitfield (2), Jesse Pye, Jimmy Mullen.

The Newport County Hall of Fame was launched on 3 April 2009 by Andrew Taylor, club programme columnist and author of Look Back in Amber: Memories of Newport County. Fans can nominate players to be considered by a committee. To date there have been five sets of inductions with further inductions planned regularly. [1]
