Lauris is a distinctive presence hanging over the Durance valley in the southern Luberon, its dominant castle often described as the prow of a ship jutting out from its promontory. The chateau itself cannot be visited but its striking gardens can - these are themed around dyeing and aromatic plants, amongst others.

Perched on its cliff, Lauris offers an amazing view across the Durance valley, the Alpilles and the Luberon. Like a figurehead, an 18th-century château stands plumb on the rock, overlooking some superb hanging gardens where ponds and fountains have retained all their charm.

2024年5月21日 · Driving along the road from Pertuis to Cavaillon, following the meandering course of the Durance River, the perched village and castle of Lauris often caught my eye. Framed by the lush valley below, Lauris appeared both magnificent and intriguing from my vantage point in the car.
