Ramin is a type of wood known scientifically as Gonystylus macrophyllum and G. bancanus (Gonystylaceae). It is a versatile timber with a pale straw or creamy-brown colour and a straight to shallowly interlocked grain. The texture of Ramin is fine and even and it has a plain appearance that lacks figure or gloss.

It is a medium-sized to fairly large tree of up to 40 m tall. The bole is cylindrical, up to120 cm in diameter but usually less, sometimes slightly fluted at the base, with many knee-roots. A gregarious, often dominant, tree of lowland freshwater swamp and peat-swamp forest.
