The Los Angeles (LA) symbol was created in 1941 by a commercial artist named Thomas Wallace Kelly. He was hired to design it for the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce as part of a campaign to promote the city. Kelly designed a yellow “figure eight” along with three stars above it.
