Native Spanish speaker. From my knowledge, never heard someone use “gata” for a female cat. They still use “el gato” regardless of the gender.

It's called La Gata and I watched it every night after school when it came on the tv when I was a kid in Ghana. Ever since I moved out of Ghana I couldn't find it anywhere and it's been a couple of years.
