The LPU-21 is a manual inflation horse-collar type life preserver requiring the user to pull a beaded handle on each waist bladder. The LPU-23 was essentially the same life preserver except had auto-inflators and was used on ejection seat aviators. The LPA-2 was the earlier/first/original version of the LPU-21.

In the 1980s - 1990s, there were 2 main naval life preservers: the automatic LPU-23 and the manual LPU-21 [the current issue LP is the auto LPU-36 and manual LPU-34]. As you can see from the photos, the LPU-23 (left column) and the LPU-21 (right column) look almost identical.

The LPU-21/P series life preserver assembly weighs 4 pounds (without survival items) and provides a minimum of 65 pounds of buoyancy. The flotation assembly is constructed of polychloroprene-coated nylon cloth and consists of two independent flotation chambers.
