The North British Railway (NBR) G Class (LNER Class Y9) is a class of 0-4-0 ST steam locomotive designed for shunting. Some locomotives were equipped with small wooden tenders to carry extra coal. They were introduced in 1882 and thirty-eight entered service on the NBR between 1882 and 1899.

The Drummond Y9 (NBR Class G) 0-4-0ST Shunters The NBR Class G locomotives were introduced by Drummond. The first two were purchased in 1882 from Neilson & Co, to their standard design. Originally purchased for dock shunting, they proved to be eminently suitable for light shunting in both docks and the Scottish lowlands.

At Grouping, the LNER classified them as Class Y9. One (LNER 10087) was withdrawn in 1938, and the remaining 33 survived until 1953. These were withdrawn between 1953 and 1962. The Y9s were renumbered many times during their life with the NBR, and received preliminary numbers from the LNER, before being given 9000 series numbers in 1924.

LNER 0-4-0 'Y' Locomotives 0-4-0 Tender Locomotives The 0-4-0 is associated with the earliest steam locomotives, but one of a pair built as late as 1868 on the North British Railway (NBR) survived to Grouping (1923). Many of the Y9 'Scottish Pugs' also ran with wooden trucks as coal tenders but these were classed as tank engines.
